Exploring Immigrants’ Mental Wellness Needs

July 31
9:00 am - 12:00 pm

description

Research shows that migrants have higher rates of mental health
needs in comparison to general populations (NAMI, 2019). This
is often due to the traumatic experiences that they may have
faced before, during, and after migration. This presentation
examines migrants’ civil rights to be an active part of a society
and economy without discrimination or oppression. It also
discusses some common challenges that immigrants face when
migrating. As our mental health is intricately linked to various
factors, such as physical health, educational and/or occupational
achievements, and financial and economic participation
(Bickenbach, 2011), it is imperative that the various factors are
addressed to care for migrants’ mental health needs. This
presentation applies the eight ‘Wellness Dimensions’ of
Swarbrick’s Wellness Model to migrants’ wellness to learn how to
support their mental wellness needs better.
