IMPORTANT NOTICE – ICDVP Supervision Changes

ICDVP Supervision Requirements

In 2024, ICDVP created an Ad-Hoc Committee to review the current supervision requirements for both the CDVP and CPAIP certifications.  The goal of the committee was to review requirements with the purpose of addressing barriers without sacrificing ICDVP standards. The recommendations from the committee were brought to the full Board for a vote.

The ICDVP Board of Directors has voted to make the following changes to requirements for the 150 hours of supervised direct service for CDVP and CPAIP certification.  These changes are effective 10/01/24 and include the following:

CDVP Certification

Allow individuals who currently work in a domestic violence agency to complete the eligible services at their agency and receive supervision from a certified supervision site.

Domestic violence agencies are defined as those programs that:

  • Are a legal incorporated not for profit organization whose principal mission is to provide services to victims of domestic violence. Services consist of one or more of the following:  information, crisis intervention, emergency shelter, referral, counseling, advocacy, or emotional support.
  • Have a record of providing effective, victim-centered services for the past two years. Victim-centered services are those that promote empowerment and self-determination of victims and which hold abusers accountable for their behavior.
  • Provide services that are free, nondiscriminatory, and confidential.
  • Adhere to confidentiality and privileged communication as defined by the IDVA.

(750 ILCS 60/227) (from Ch. 40, par. 2312-27)

Sec. 227. Privileged communications between domestic violence counselors and victims.

  • Provide 24-hour telephone accessibility by personnel without requiring the victim to make a second phone call or wait for a return call.
  • Provide access to safe housing, including access to trained staff and services to effectively meet the needs of victims.

If an individual seeking CDVP certification works at a domestic violence agency that is not an ICDVP certified supervision site, they can request approval to complete the eligible services at their agency and receive supervision from a current CDVP employed at a certified supervision site.  The ICDVP External Supervision Approval Form must be submitted to ICDVP.  The request will be reviewed, and a determination will be made at the sole discretion of ICDVP.  Supervision services may not begin until approved by ICDVP.

Revised the CDVP Exam Application

We revised the exam application to include naming the agency where 150 hours of documented and satisfactory services were provided and if necessary, the agency where the supervisor is employed.  ICDVP is in the process of working with the exam company to get the revised exam application posted on their website.

ICDVP supervision – both CDVP and CPAIP

Supervision for both CDVP and CPAIP requires more than just a signature of a CDVP or CPAIP on the Supervisor Assessment portion of the exam application.  See the ICDVP Policy Manual for details regarding supervision requirements and guidelines.

Supervision Tracking Log

CDVPs and CPAIPs who provide supervision are required to document supervision details.  ICDVP does not require a specific type of supervision tracking log but has created a sample log that supervisors can choose to utilize when providing supervision.

ICDVP certified CDVP Supervision Sites and CPAIPs who provide supervision must keep documentation for five years.

ICDVP Technical Assistance

ICDVP plans to provide technical assistance regarding the supervision revisions through scheduled office hours.
